Inquire Within
In Genialism™, Inquire Within is the practice of turning inward to recognise what genuinely matters before allowing external expectations or ready-made answers to determine one’s direction.
It brings intellectual, emotional, intuitive or heart-centred, and bodily experience into consideration. Authenticity makes room for this recognition; interpretation, evidence, and dialogue help a person examine what is noticed.
Inner listening & knowledge
The philosophical account begins with a question: what can a person understand by attending to their own experience? Reflection may reveal a belief, emotion may disclose an attachment, and bodily awareness may draw attention to an unresolved concern.
These experiences have different roles. Their significance does not make each interpretation correct. The account of Inquire Within therefore places self-knowledge alongside critical thought, external evidence, and dialogue.
Four dimensions
- Intellectual. Reflection on beliefs, assumptions, reasons, and inconsistencies. This dimension concerns the capacity to examine why one holds a judgement and whether its reasons withstand scrutiny.
- Emotional. Attention to what emotions reveal about values, attachments, expectations, and conflicts. An emotion can make something important visible while still requiring interpretation.
- Intuitive or heart-centred. Attention to conscience, felt significance, and an orientation that may precede explicit explanation. Earlier presentations also use the language of soul or spirit for this dimension of lived experience.
- Bodily. Awareness of sensations and embodied responses. These can alert a person to something requiring attention without determining, by themselves, what is true or which action is justified.
The four dimensions are complementary perspectives, not a hierarchy of increasingly infallible answers.
Integration & interpretation
Illustrative case: someone welcomes a promotion intellectually yet feels persistent unease. The unease does not prove that the job is wrong; it may concern workload, fear of change, or a conflict with what they value. Inner listening makes the tension available for examination rather than treating either calculation or feeling as a final verdict.
Integration involves considering these experiences together while remaining attentive to their limitations. Beliefs can be biased, emotions conditioned, intuitions mistaken, and bodily sensations ambiguous. The purpose is a fuller understanding of one’s position, with room for correction.
Reflective priority
The research proposal on AI mediation introduces reflective priority: a person’s own concerns, purposes, and provisional reasons should have a place at the beginning of inquiry, before problem-framing or practical judgement is delegated.
This preserves an initial human contribution while allowing it to change. A preliminary position can be challenged by evidence, other people, or AI-assisted analysis. The principle does not require a perfectly transparent self or privileged access to certainty.
Scope & limits
Inner listening concerns personal meaning and direction. Inner truth, in this usage, is an understanding of what genuinely matters to a person, not technical, scientific, or medical knowledge acquired without external evidence. A strong feeling is not sufficient to establish a factual claim or the moral worth of an action. Inner experience must remain open to examination through reasons, consequences, and the perspectives of others.
